「息子がBC州のリッチモンドの高校に留学しています。」というと、カナダのことをある程度知っている人からは、必ずと言っていいほど「え？何を思って中国人だらけのリッチモンドに？」と訝しがられます。
かくいう我が家も留学エージェントに「うちと強いネットワークがありますから。」というよくわからない理由で、リッチモンドだけを勧められ、言われるがままに決めてしまったものの、息子がリッチモンドで留学を始めて、そこで初めてリッチモンドは巨大チャイナ・タウンだとわかり、不安になりました。だってね、留学エージェントからは「息子さんが行く学校はインド人が多い学校です。」と、言われ、それを素直に信じていたので、まさかこんなに中国人が多いとは想像をしていませんでした。
ELL（基礎英語）の授業も中国人ばかりなので、ダイバーシティーなんてものはなく、ペア・ワークも、グループ・ワークも中国語なまりの英語を話すクラスメイトと組むことになり、これも親としては心配でした。
息子がリッチモンドに留学を始めて1年以上が経ちましたが、今は偶然にもリッチモンドとご縁があって、心の底から良かったと思っています。
中国本土に14億人、世界中にチャイナタウンを持つ中国人なわけですが、これだけいると、「中国人とは！」とひとくくりに語れないほどに、豊かさ、教養、思想、優秀さなどにおいて実に様々な人がいます。13億人プラスですからねぇ。
リッチモンドにいる中国人は、中国本土のどこ、という一か所から来ているわけではなく、世界の様々な国の出身の人たちのようです。総じて富裕層で、優秀な人たちが多いようです。PAC（保護者会）のミーティングや、息子の学校のWeChatのコミュニティーで皆で話していて感じるのですが、皆、発言がロジカルだし、他者に対して誠実で、合理的な判断をするし、学校の資金集めにも非常に協力的です。総じてお金や時間の使い方も上手です。
また、意外なところで、多くの中国人が共産主義の中国出身ということが効果を発揮し、「上の人が決めたことはちゃんと守らないといけない。」という考えが根付いているようで、保護者会会長Cが何か一度決めると、皆いっせいに同じ方向に向かって動き出し、協力しあう様子も「集団として、優秀～！」と感心させられます。（私が言うのもなんですが、、。）
日本にいても、多くの中国人と出会うことがありますが、こういった富裕層の集団と出会うチャンスはめったにありません。仮に数少ない富裕層の中国人に出会えたとしても、たいてい仕事関係の人で、プライベートで仲良くする、ということも少ないと思います。
私は昔、中国人留学生専門の日本語学校で、学校一の超優秀な生徒ばかりのクラスを担当したことがあります。その中には「北京大学の医学部にいたけど、満足できませんでした。早稲田に入りたくて日本にきました。」というQSランキング（世界の大学ランキング指標の一つ）なんか思いっきり無視した（笑）、自分軸のある考えを持った生徒さんもいて、講師として、非常に貴重な体験をしました。彼らは授業の中でも、他のクラスとは、理解までのスピード感が全然違いました。彼らは学ぶべき本質を短時間で理解し、出された宿題もしっかりとこなし、どんどん日本語が話せるようになっていきました。こういうのを「優秀」って言うんだな～、と、何度も授業中に驚きました。
リッチモンドの人たちと接していると、あの超優秀中国人留学生のクラスを思い出します。きっとあの超優秀中国人生徒の保護者は、リッチモンドの保護者たちみたいな人なんだと思います。14億人プラスの超巨大人口のピラミッドがあると考えると、ピラミッドの△の上の方にいる種類の人たちなのです。

The Chinese in Richmond do not seem to come
from any one place in mainland China, but from many different countries around
the world. In general, they seem to be wealthy and talented people, and when I
talk to them at PAC meetings and in the WeChat community at my son's school, I
find that they are logical in what they say, honest with others, rational in
their decisions and very supportive of the school's fundraising. In general,
they are also very smart with
the
use of money and time.
Also, in a surprising way, the fact that
many Chinese come from communist China has had an effect: "What the
higher-ups decide must be followed properly." Once the Parents'
Association Chairman C makes a decision, everyone starts moving in the same
direction and cooperates with each other, which is also impressive.
In Japan, we see many Chinese people, but
we rarely have the chance to meet a group of wealthy people like Richmond
Chinese.
I once worked at a Japanese language school
specializing in Chinese students, where I was in charge of a class full of the

Waseda University." He had his own

The speed of their understanding was
totally different from the other classes in the course. They understood the
essence of what they needed to learn in a very short time, did the homework
they were given, and became more and more fluent in Japanese. I was surprised
many times during the classes.
When I am in contact with the people of Richmond,
I am reminded of that class of super-brilliant Chinese students. I'm sure that
the parents of those super-bright Chinese students are like the parents of the
Richmond people .
When you think of a pyramid of 1.4 billion
plus people, a very huge population of Chinese people, they are the kind of
people who are at the top of the pyramid, the △ of the pyramid.
With that in mind, I think that having the
opportunity to study in Richmond as a young teenager, to have the chance to
study alongside the best and brightest of the wealthy Chinese and to witness
their excellence is an invaluable experience that I would not trade for
anything.
