ELLの先生に聞いてみた（问及ELL教师）

留学生にとってELL（留学生用の英語の授業）の先生は、カナダで最初に接する先生です。留学に対する考え、授業に対するモチベーションはELLの先生のお人柄、ホスピタリティにかかっている、と言っても過言ではありません。

息子の学校のW先生は、保護者の私から見ても、「あなたは女神ですか！」「あなたは主成分、砂糖ですか！」と言いたくなるような、超スイートな先生です。そんなW先生に、おずおずとインタビューをお願いしたところ、二つ返事で受けてくださいました。

Question 1: 台湾からカナダに来たのはいつですか、またカナダに住んで何年になりますか？

Answer: 母国台湾からカナダに来たのは1995年なので、カナダに住んで27年になります。

Question 2:　台湾はリッチモンドや日本のように、教育に熱心な国・地域だとよく聞きます。実際いかがでしょうか？どのような違いがありますか？

Answer: 台湾は確かに教育への関心が強い国です。親は自分の子どもには最高の学校や大学に通わせ、実りあるキャリアを積んでほしいと願っています。私の記憶では、学校の授業時間は長く、放課後は家庭教師センターで英語や科学などの教科の授業を受けることが多いです。カナダの学校とは異なり、テストや試験の成績で評価されます。というのも、目指す大学やカレッジに入学するためには、これらの科目の入試を受ける必要があるからです。そのため、ほとんどの生徒が大きなプレッシャーを感じています。一方、カナダの学校制度では、よりバランスの取れた教育が行われており、生徒があらゆる面で充実した学習ができるよう提唱しています。カナダの学生は、自分の興味を探求するために選択科目を履修し、スポーツや課外活動に参加して、対人関係やリーダーシップのスキルを磨くことが推奨されています。

Question 3: あなたは他のELLの先生方と一緒に捨て犬を保護する活動をしていらっしゃいますね。この活動に参加されたきっかけを教えていただけますか？

Answer: 私は昔から犬が好きでしたが、数年前に同僚からこの問題を聞くまで、犬の過剰繁殖の問題を知りませんでした。リッチモンドやバンクーバーの路上で野良犬を見かけることはありません。彼らはシェルターやBC州、カナダ全土の農村地域にいるからです。これらの犬のほとんどは愛らしく、愛情のある家にふさわしいので、世界中のペットの過剰繁殖問題を減らすために、より多くの人が「ペットショップで購入するよりも、捨て犬を引き取る」ことを望みます。

Question 4: 息子から、あなたは日本に行ったことがあり、日本のことをよく知っていると聞きました。あなたにとって日本はどんな国ですか、あるいは日本についてどんな印象をお持ちですか？

Answer: 日本は私の好きな旅行先のひとつです。日本について詳しいとは言えませんが、私が日本に惹かれるのは、やはり人です。日本人の細部へのこだわりや仕事に対する姿勢は素晴らしいものがあります。より洗練された製品を作るために、日々技術を向上させようとする人たちを本当に尊敬しています。私が宿泊した日本のホテルはいつも清潔で、客室乗務員はとてもプロフェッショナルです。ある年、ANAで日本に行ったときの客室乗務員の気配りは忘れられません。フライト中、あまり食べなかった私に「大丈夫ですか」と声をかけてくださり、バナナを持ってきてくれたのです。私はこれまで十数回エコノミークラスに乗りましたが、こんなに丁寧にケアしてもらったことはありません。彼女をはじめ、多くの人のおかげで、私は日本人と日本のファンになりました。

Question 5: 現在、私たちの学校では、9月から新たに8年生の生徒、留学生、転校生が在籍しています。これらの生徒の中には、まだ学校に馴染めず、不安を感じている生徒もいるかもしれません。そんな生徒たちにメッセージをお願いします。

Answer: 当校へようこそ! 新しい学校での生活は不安なものですが、わが校のコミュニティは思いやりのあるスタッフやフレンドリーな生徒で溢れており、新入生や帰国子女にとても親切に対応してくれます。当校は今まで通っていた学校とはかなり違うので、何か疑問があれば遠慮なく質問して、周りの人や仲間から助けてもらいましょう。私たちは、皆さんが楽しく、アットホームな雰囲気で、素晴らしい学習体験とエキサイティングな思い出を一緒に作ってくれることを望んでいます。

Question 1: When did you come to Canada from Taiwan, and how long have you been in Canada?

Answer: I came to Canada from my home country Taiwan in 1995, so I've been living in Canada for 27 years.

Question 2: We often hear that Taiwan, like Richmond and Japan, is a country/area with a strong commitment to education. Do you agree with it? Could you tell us more about the difference?

Answer: Taiwan definitely is a country with a strong commitment to education. The parents want their children to attend the best school and university so they can have a rewarding career. From what I can remember, the school days are long and the students often go to tutoring centers after school to have lessons in academic subjects like English and science. Students are marked by how well they do on tests and exams only, which is different from what happens in Canadian schools. There is usually more emphasis on academic subjects because students need to take entrance exams in these subjects in order to enter the university or college they are aiming for. Because of the entrance exams, most students are under immense pressure. On the other hand, the Canadian school system takes a more well-balanced approach to education and advocates for the need for students to be well-rounded in all aspects of learning. Canadian students are encouraged to take elective courses to explore their interests and participate in sports and extracurricular activities to hone their interpersonal and leadership skills.

Question 3: You work with other ELL teachers to protect abandoned dogs. How did you get involved in this activity?

Answer: I've always loved dogs but was not aware of the dog overpopulation problem until my colleague told me about this issue a few years ago. We don't see stray dogs on the streets in Richmond or Vancouver because they are in shelters or in rural communities in BC or across Canada. Most of these dogs are sweet and deserve a loving home so I hope more people can "adopt instead of shop" to help reduce the pet overpopulation problem all over the world.

Question 4: My son told me that you have been to Japan before and know a lot about Japan. What kind of country is Japan for you? or what kind of aspects do you have about Japan?

Answer: Japan is one of my favourite travel destinations. I can't say that I know a lot about Japan, but what really attracts me to Japan is the people. Japanese people's attention to detail and work ethics are superb. I really admire those who try to improve their craft on a daily basis to create a more refined product. The Japanese hotels I've stayed at are always clean and the attendants are very professional. I will never forget how attentive a flight attendant was to me when I flew with ANA to Japan one year. During the flight, I didn't eat a lot, so she asked me if I was fine and offered to bring me a banana. I've flown economy class more than a dozen times and have never been cared for so thoughtfully. She and many others have made me a fan of Japanese people and Japan.

Question 5: We now have new Grade 8 students, international students, and transfer students to our school from September. Some of these students may not yet feel comfortable at school and may be feeling anxious. Please give a message to these students.

Answer: Welcome to our school! Starting at a new school can be scary, but our school community is filled with caring staff and friendly students who are very happy to help new and returning students. Our school might be quite different from your previous school, so if you have any questions, don't be afraid to ask and get help from the people and peers around you. We want you to have fun and feel at home and are excited to create wonderful learning experiences and exciting memories with you.
